Hand-Stitched Stories: Textile Art by Sabine Kaner

Saturday 19 November to Sunday 18 December 2022 & Tuesday 24 January to Sunday 26 February 2023

‘Hand-Stitched Stories’ is an exhibition focused on the human condition, told through mixed media textiles. Sabine Kaner’s work generates conversations on identity, mental health, memory and personal experiences, using colours, symbols and semi-abstract compositions to create visual narratives and metaphors.

Sabine grew up in London in the 1960s and 1970s in a mixed-race family, her mother German, her father Jamaican and of the Windrush generation. She studied at Saint Martin’s and the Central School of Art, London. Her colourful, thought-provoking work explores social, personal and political issues, combining representational and abstract elements. It is underpinned by a strong belief in sustainable practices.

The Artist was awarded an Arts Council professional development grant in 2022 and is researching ways of integrating glass, print and knit into her textiles. Now based in the Stroud area, she also collaborates with her Stroud-born husband and furniture specialist Jake Kaner.

Sabine’s beautiful greetings cards and exquisite, limited edition printed silk scarves will be on sale in the Museum Shop.
