'Photosynthesis’ by Cleo Mussi & Fiona Haser Bizony

20 July to 1 September 2024

Zero waste ceramic artist Cleo Mussi joins forces with ethical horticulturalist and organic flower farmer Fiona Haser Bizony to create a botanical, floral seasonal display.  The visual journey through the seasons and months of the year celebrate the near dormancy of Winter, the tentative eruptions of Spring, the exuberance of Summer and the wisdom and abundance of Autumn.

Cleo Mussi explains: “The exhibition will be a poetic window exploring the idea of photosynthesis, nature’s original ‘magic trick’ which gave life to all living things; where sunlight and water were transformed leaving oxygen as a by-product and capturing carbon into the humus and the rocks and thus stabilising our blue planet. All life is conjured from carbon, the most important substance in the biosphere and over last few hundred years we have abused it at our peril. The threats are almost too complex to perceive but perceive it we must as we are living with an environmental overdraft.”

Cleo Mussi is a renowned mosaic artist who creates spectacular works using recycled ceramics. Working with a material that would normally end up in landfill, she brings a new lease of life to discarded and broken crockery. In her studio she painstakingly arranges salvaged shards of china into mesmerising creations that engage and stimulate her audience. As a visual story teller, Cleo is concerned with environment, and she uses her art to dig deep and explore the issues that affect us all.

Fiona Haser Bizony is a creative practitioner who has taken many different turnings in her career. Most recently she founded an organic flower farm, with the aim of encouraging interest in British seasonal flowers, while campaigning against commercial monoculture and advocating for greener horticulture and ways of protecting biodiversity.
